The results from the survey by Which? were released this week and the report claimed that 60% of 2,000 adults questioned online had changed the way they shop. This means 6 in 10 changed their habits because of the recent food scandal.

The recent exposure of the use of horsemeat in many food items has led to a drop in the level of consumer trust in the food industry. According to the survey, this has dropped by almost a quarter (24%) since the scandal broke.

In addition, 30% of shoppers are now buying less processed meat and 24% are buying fewer ready meals with meat in, or choosing the vegetarian option.

who is to blame?
When the Shopper Discounts & Rewards team took a deeper look into the consumer survey, we found that it also reported that over two thirds of people (68%) do not think the government has been giving enough attention to enforcing labelling laws. Further to this, it claimed that almost half of consumers (47%) are not confident that ‘ingredient information’ provided is accurate.

Richard Lloyd, Executive Director of Which? has said:

“There has been a collapse in confidence in the food industry. The horsemeat scandal exposed the need for urgent changes to the way food fraud is detected and standards are enforced. These serious failings must be put right if consumers are to feel fully confident in the food they are buying once more”

What do you think of this consumer survey? Has the horsemeat scandal changed the way you buy? Have you lost confidence in the retail food industry?
